Originally from Beijing, Dr. Jiayue Cecilia Wu (AKA: 武小慈) is a scholar, composer, audio engineer, and multimedia technologist. Her work focuses on how technology can augment the healing power of music. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Design and Engineering in 2000. She then worked as a professional composer, publisher, and music producer at EMI Records and Universal Music Group for ten years in the Greater China Area. In 2013, she obtained her Master of Arts degree in Music, Science, and Technology from Stanford University. In 2018, she obtained her Ph.D. in Media Arts and Technology from UC Santa Barbara. She joined the University of Colorado’s College of Arts and Media in 2018, where she serves as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Recording Arts and has managed their MSRA Graduate Program. In 2021, Her first book, Sound from Within: Phenomenology and Practice, was published by Springer Nature Press. She has also published 27 peer-reviewed research publications and three book chapters at the most prestigious venues in audio engineering and computer music, a male-dominated field where only 3%-5% are women. She composed, engineered, and produced 100+ pieces of award-winning multimedia compositions and interactive audio-visual installations that have been officially selected by notable peer-reviewed research venues, museums, and international film festivals, such as the National Museum of China, Denver Art Museum, IEEE, LAC, ICMC, NIME, and SEAMUS. She serves as the chairperson of the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Committee and Board of Governors at AES. She is also the Editor-in-Chief of SEAMUS and the board director-at-large at the International Computer Music Association. She has held national and international "Embodied Sonic Meditation" workshops, guest lectures, and training seminars in Music, Meditation, and Technology research around the world.
